About
Lauren Martino is a New York City–based artist and mental health professional. Art-making serves as both a restorative and generative process, expanding her capacity for reflection, presence, and connection in her work with others. At the same time, her experiences in the mental health field—along with the psychological theories, emotional realities, and relational dynamics she encounters—provide a rich source of meaning that informs her artistic inquiry.
Her work explores the relationship between inner and outer worlds, examining how internal landscapes are projected, perceived, and embodied. Through painting, she investigates themes of consciousness, the interplay of mind, body, and spirit, femininity, domesticity, craft traditions, and the evolving meaning of home. Drawing from psychology, object relations theory, and lived emotional experience, her work reflects an enduring interest in mental health, the subconscious, and the complexities of living sensitively in the contemporary world.
Recurring motifs of windows, portals, thresholds, shelters, and illuminated interiors function as metaphors for psychic space, inviting contemplation of what is hidden, remembered, protected, or transformed. Architectural forms, decorative patterns, and textile-inspired ornamentation merge with abstract fields of color to create environments that exist between memory, dream, and lived experience. Rather than depicting specific places, these works construct emotionally resonant spaces that suggest refuge, transition, and the possibility of connection between disparate aspects of the self.
Color serves as both a sensory and psychological language throughout her practice. Luminous passages of warmth emerge from deep atmospheric fields, while symbolic forms and repeated motifs evoke the rhythms of memory, attachment, and perception. Through these compositions, Lauren seeks to create contemplative spaces that nourish emotional reflection and encourage viewers to engage with the subtle, often unseen dimensions of human experience.
